Some people in Tampa may ask themselves, “Why do I have more wrinkles than my friends?” The next question is usually, “how can I reduce wrinkles?” There are several answers as to why some of us get more wrinkles than others and there are solutions to reduce the wrinkles if desired. Aging is a fact of life in Tampa, whether we like it or not, and as we age it is inevitable that our bodies and our skin change. In order to understand the aging process it is very important to know that skin aging is influenced by two main factors: intrinsic (internal influences) and extrinsic (external) ones.
Two Factors for Wrinkles:
Intrinsic aging is a natural process that is programmed by our genes. We have little control over intrinsic aging which influences characteristics such as the color of our skin, our skin type and our pore size. Intrinsic aging causes a decrease in collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin is what gives our skin its strength and elasticity, decreases shedding of dead skin cells and loss of fat beneath our skin as we age. These changes can appear as fine wrinkles, hollowed cheeks, eye sockets and thinning of skin. Intrinsic changes start as early as our 20’s, but are generally more noticeable when we reach our late 30’s or early 40’s.
Extrinsic aging is what creates more of our wrinkles. Extrinsic aging is usually the bigger of the two determinants to aging. Factors that we expose ourselves to on a regular basis which cause extrinsic aging include pollution, the amount of alcohol we drink, the food we eat, the amount of sleep we get, whether or not we choose to smoke and most importantly our exposure to the sun. Extrinsic aging resembles natural aging very closely but the changes from these elements tend to appear much earlier in life.
Wrinkles vary Person to Person:
To really understand the difference between the two types of aging, consider this example. Intrinsic aging is what would happen if you and your friends were all raised indoors away from all sunlight and pollution, and did not drink or smoke. If you eat exactly the same healthy foods, drink enough water and get the same amount of sleep each night. You would see only the effects of intrinsic aging if this scenario could be maintained until middle age or longer. This would limit all variables but each person would age a little differently, leaving at least one person to ask “why am I more wrinkled than my friends?”
Together, intrinsic and extrinsic aging cause the visible signs of aging to appear and over time, progress through three stages – early, moderate and advanced. Because our skin is constantly working to protect our internal organs, it is paying a daily price especially by being exposed to the sun. Sun damage can take decades to show but usually by the time we are seeing the signs it is too late to completely reverse the damage done (at least without outside help).
The good news is we do have some control over how our skin ages! Healthy lifestyle habits, limited exposure to the sun and modern miracles such as dermal fillers, Botox and plastic surgery can help lessen the visible signs of aging. Injectable products such as dermal fillers (Radiesse, Juvederm, Belotero, Restylane) can fill in the creases and restore the skin to its more youthful appearance. Botox and the newer Xeomin can temporarily freeze the muscles that create the lines and both reduce and prevent visible wrinkles. These are solutions that can last 3 months to a year or more depending on the product used. The injectable products take only a day or so to take effect and yet only take minutes to administer so it is easy to work a treatment into your busy schedule. Of course, with all medical procedures, you should be sure to work with a highly qualified physician in an accredited medical facility to be sure that you get the best results.
