More and more people are having plastic surgery these days and having “some work done” is no longer something to keep secret.  It is become socially acceptable to get a little Botox or have a facelift to help look young and beautiful for awhile longer.  But while plastic surgery has become more commonplace, there are still some important considerations to think about before choosing to undergo a procedure.

1) What are your expectations and motivations? There are many valid reasons for undergoing facial plastic surgery but it is important to understand why you wish to have a procedure and what you expect for an outcome.  For many people, facial surgery is a way to get their outsides to match their insides.  For example, you may be only 40 years old but have the wrinkles of a 65 year old because of too much time spent in the sun.  While not life threatening, an older visage can create a lack of confidence, feeling of being undesirable and even threaten job prospects.  Or you may have facial flaws whether from old acne scars or from an accident, a crooked nose since birth or any of numerous facial issues that may have bothered you for years.  Surgery and injectables can be ways to improve your appearance and increase your self-assurance, long as you are not expecting that you will come out looking like your favorite celebrity.  The best prospects for successful surgery have realistic expectations that they will still look like themselves, only a bit younger, less wrinkled or with fewer facial flaws.

2) Are you getting the right procedure? Some plastic surgeons have patients that arrive at the office to order a specific treatment without considering any other options.  Perhaps a friend had a facelift and they want to do the same or they read about a new technique that they think would help them to remove the wrinkles around their eyes.  According to Dr. Michael Jasin, a Board certified facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, Florida, the best course of action is to set a consultation with a well-qualified surgeon to discuss your areas of concern.  Often times, there are different ways to correct the problem and some may be less invasive than others.  A good plastic surgeon can advise the best course of action based on the patient’s goals, financial budget, age and health.  Some patients may be best suited for a brow lift rather than a full face lift or non-surgical rhinoplasty (nose job) rather than a traditional nose job that will require weeks away from work.

3) Have you considered the risks and recovery time? Depending on the type of procedure, the risks and recovery time can vary greatly.  Some procedures such as a traditional face lift or nose job can involve technically difficult surgery and can take weeks of healing time before you can return to work.  Other treatments such as Botox or dermal filler injections (Juvederm, Restylane or Radiesse) may involve just an hour in the office with little to no recovery time needed.  In fact, with so many advances in the field of facial rejuvenation and surgery, Dr. Jasin of the Jasin Facial Rejuvenation Institute says that there are often less invasive surgical options available that are not as risky as the full scale surgery of the past.  Many patients can see great results with a Simplicity Face Lift or non-surgical procedure that will accomplish the same goals, only with far less cost, risk and recovery time.  But in all cases, there are risks that should be reviewed before the procedure.  An ethical medical practice will always discuss the treatment in advance and describe any risks before doing any procedures.

As with any surgery or medical procedure, you will want to make sure that you choose a Board certified surgeon at a fully accredited medical facility.  Set up a consultation in advance to discuss your area of concern and learn more about the options that are best for you.  Take the time to interview the doctor or staff to make sure that all your questions are answered and you fully understand the procedure, the costs, benefits, risks and recovery.  If you have done your homework then you are ready to see some of the advantages that facial plastic surgery can provide to help you look like a younger, more attractive version of yourself.
