Age brings many complaints, but if all goes well, many of the woes may be simply cosmetic. Age spots and wrinkles are often associated with old age but are not dangerous to your health, just your ego. With any amount of time on the planet, we all develop some skin flaws whether due to exposure to the sun or just plain old aging. Some may also have picked up some facial scars along the way but all of these can be treated to reduce their appearance if they bother you. No matter what your age, minor facial flaws can be distressing and make you look older than you feel on the inside. If you are interested in removing these, laser skin resurfacing may be just the cure.
How Age Spots and Wrinkles Form
While everyone is pretty aware of how wrinkles are caused, age spots are somewhat more of a mystery to some. Age spots are also called liver spots; skin experts label them solar lentigines. These spots are a result of exposure to the sun and are created in areas of the skin where there is more melanin (the substance that produces a tan). They are round or oblong spots that can run from a light tan to a darker brown color. Their size can vary greatly but do appear in areas most exposed to the sun. So they are commonly visible on the face, hands, arms or shoulders. While most age spots do not appear until after age 50, some younger people get them if they have spent a lot of time in the sun. While not considered a medical problem, age spots are not considered attractive to most people. Wrinkles, of course, are caused by a variety of factors that cause the skin to lose elasticity (too much sun, smoking, poor hydration, age, etc) and pretty much everyone gets them at some point in their lives.
Laser Skin Resurfacing Can Remove Age Spots and Wrinkles
For many people, reducing the appearance of age spots and minor wrinkles can be accomplished with laser skin resurfacing treatments. Lasers work by removing the gently removing the top layers of skin to allow healthier skin to rise to the surface. When the skin heals, new collagen is formed which will often produce a smoother surface. In most cases, the age spots can be removed because the melanin is usually not contained in the deeper layers of the skin tissue. If not removed entirely, the appearance of age spots and wrinkles can be greatly reduced. According to Dr. Dominic M. Castellano, a facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, laser skin resurfacing is often the first course of treatment for any type of skin blemish that is contained within the top layers of the skin.
Facial Scars, Age Spots and Wrinkles all helped with Laser Treatment
Some of the other skin flaws that can be successfully treated with laser skin resurfacing are acne scars, moles, non-cancerous skin lesions and scars due to trauma or surgery. Dr. Castellano says that laser skin resurfacing is an excellent way to remove scars and lesions from the skin’s surface but cautions that not all laser treatments are the same. At Jasin Facial and Body Rejuvenation, we prefer to use the Erbium-YAG laser because it is absorbed by the skin better than some older laser technologies. This means that there is less likelihood of heat damage to the skin and more rapid healing post procedure. The laser can also be used to produce effects similar to a facelift for those with moderate sun damage that want a naturally younger appearance without having to undergo a surgical procedure. Deeper scars or some types of skin flaws may require a different treatment and this can be diagnosed during the complimentary consultation at Jasin Facial and Body Rejuvenation.
