If you are interested in reducing wrinkles, you may already be familiar with dermal fillers and their benefits.  However, not all dermal fillers work the same way and not all plastic surgeons in Tampa are equally skilled at removing wrinkles using these injectable

products.  In fact, one filler that has a lot of unique attributes is Radiesse but it is one of the hardest to administer correctly.  Learn more about Radiesse, what it is used for, how it works and how to find the right practitioner.

What Makes Radiesse Different?

There are many dermal fillers available in Tampa and new ones are still being developed to treat wrinkles.  Many of the most common fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Belotero are made with hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a naturally occurring substance in the human body.  Fillers work by adding back volume into the skin tissue to “fill in”

Radiesse treatment

wrinkles and many of the fillers that use hyaluronic acid as a base will continue to work for three to six months on average.  Radiesse lasts far longer than those fillers made with HA because it is made out of calcium hydroxylapatite which does not break down as quickly within the body.  This form of calcium is an element which is produced by our own bodies so it is generally considered to be very safe and effective at treating wrinkles.

Radiesse contains calcium-based microspheres and gel that can add instant volume to fill in deep wrinkles and furrows.  It can also be used to correct volume loss in the face, whereas other fillers are used to treat mild to moderate wrinkles.  Radiesse can be used to plump up the cheeks as well as to treat marionette lines and other deep facial grooves.  Another unique feature of Radiesse is that it can act as a “scaffold” under the skin and help stimulate the growth of new collagen which gives the skin elasticity.  This filler is often used as part of a “liquid” face-lift or injectable facelift procedure and the results can last for up to a year to 18 months before another treatment is required.  This makes Radiesse the longest acting dermal filler on the market today.

What Areas are Best Treated with Radiesse?

Radiesse has the unique ability to treat a wide range of wrinkles including very severe facial lines.  This product is often used to treat the deep wrinkles around the mouth, such as marionette or “frown” lines.  It is very effective at filling in smile lines (nasolabial folds) and is often used to plump up the cheeks or restore volume lost in other areas of the face.  However, because Radiesse contains microspheres, it is not used to treat very fine wrinkles or areas of the face where the skin is extremely thin.  Using Radiesse in the lips or in the tender tissue under the eyes is not recommended because it is too thick and can create lumpiness in those areas.

According to Dr. Michael Jasin, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, Radiesse can be more difficult to work with because of its thicker properties, but no other substance can provide the volume and lasting effects.  It is one of the most effective ways to deliver facial contouring and add back plumpness to facial tissue in order to restore the beauty of youth.  Dr. Jasin explains that it takes a great deal of experience to work with Radiesse and that some practitioners can overdo the application if they are not proficient with the product.  Too much Radiesse can leave the patient with a mottled skin texture if not administered properly.  “There is as much an art, as a science” in the injection of dermal fillers, according to Dr. Jasin.

Is Radiesse the Best to Treat Wrinkles?

Radiesse is a safe and effective product but it does not work the same on all areas of the face.  Dr. Jasin has written many medical articles about the proper way to inject Radiesse and has instructed other plastic surgeons on best practices for administering this dermal filler.  He suggests that you meet with the provider before treatment to determine if Radiesse is right for you.  If you would like a set a complimentary consultation with Dr. Jasin to discuss the best way to reduce your wrinkles, please call (813) 975-3223 to schedule an appointment.
