Botox is one of the best known and most popular products in the Tampa area to help reduce wrinkles.  Most people are familiar with the brand-name and understand what the benefits are of Botox treatment.  However, Xeomin is relatively new to the Tampa market and many have never heard of this product that can also reduce wrinkles.

How does Xeomin work to Reduce Wrinkles?

Xeomin has been available in other countries since 2005 and was approved for use in the reduce-wrinkles-xeominU.S. in 2011 for the treatment of wrinkles.  This product is similar to Botox in that it temporarily paralyzes facial muscles to provide a smoother, more youthful appearance.  Xeomin is produced by Merz Pharmaceuticals, a very well-known and credible pharmaceutical company with offices worldwide.  The formula for Xeomin is similar to Botox, in that it is made from botulinum toxin type A.  One of the main benefits of this product over the better known brand is that it does not contain any additives.  This means that it is less likely to trigger any allergies or other reactions.  This injectable treatment also does not need to be refrigerated prior to use so it costs less to transport and distribute than Botox.

Does Xeomin Reduce Wrinkles Better than Botox?

There have been many studies done on the efficiency of Xeomin as compared to Botox and the results show that overall the two drugs are comparable.  According to Dr. Michael Jasin, a facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, “the two drugs share the same active ingredient, with the only difference being that Botox has an added protein in the formula.  Xeomin has been deemed effective in all clinical trials and we have had good results reducing facial wrinkles with this product.”    Like Botox, the effects are temporary and will last on average three to six months before another treatment is required.  It can also help prevent new wrinkles from developing in the treated area during the active period.  One of the main reasons that people choose Xeomin over Botox is that the cost is generally less than the better known name-brand.

As with Botox, Xeomin does carry some risks and so should not be dispensed by an unlicensed provider.  There is a very slight risk that botulinum toxin products may spread from the injection site to other areas where they may cause swallowing or breathing problems, but this has been rarely reported as a result of cosmetic use.  The biggest concern is that if administered by someone other than a trained plastic surgeon or provider that has a thorough knowledge and understanding of facial muscles, that the injection could paralyze the wrong set of muscles.  This may not be life-threatening but can leave the person disfigured until the drug wears off.  Most cases of adverse reactions have been attributed to poorly trained injectors who use too much of the product or have placed the product in the wrong location of the face.  Dr. Jasin says that it is better to work with a trained expert in injectable products and get the treatment only in an accredited medical facility.
