A recent study by the University of Toronto found that women that had a face lift, looked 7 years younger on average following the procedure. The women that participated were between the ages of 45 to 72 years old and researchers found that each looked one to two years younger than their actual age at the start of the study. Following a facelift, the researchers showed photos to the panel again and calculated their perceived age as 9 years younger. They determined that the average age “loss” was approximately 7 years.
The women who also got a neck lift, eyelid surgery and/or brow lift gained additional years off their appearance. Of course, the results of a cosmetic surgical procedure vary from patient to patient, depending on the doctor, the technique, and one’s own physical features. In addition to looking younger, patients reported improved self-esteem, higher quality of life and positive reactions to their new appearance.
A facelift is a surgical operation that works by tightening the facial tissue and underlying muscles to reduce wrinkles and counteract the effects of age and gravity. There are several different face lift techniques on the market today and some (such as the lifestyle lift) do not always work on the muscles under the skin. A more surface level surgery can show improvement in appearance over the short term but will not hold up as long as more traditional facelift surgery.
According to Dr. Michael Jasin, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon in Tampa, it is important that the physician tighten the underlying tissue in order to create a natural and long lasting facial improvement. Dr. Jasin created the Simplicity Facelift which is less invasive than traditional facelift surgery so the procedure requires much less recovery time and has fewer complications and scarring. This procedure is accomplished with two small incisions made above and behind the ears. The doctor then pulls the facial tissue and muscle up and back before using a special pulley stitch to hold the tightened flesh in place. Once completed, the patient will see a reduction in wrinkles and sagging skin which will greatly enhance appearance.
A facelift can also be combined with a neck lift which addresses the loose skin, jowls or “turkey waddle” that often occurs with age. A forehead lift will remove the wrinkles above the eyes and blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery can reduce the excess tissue in the eyelids to provide a more alert and younger look. Some women also opt for facial liposuction if there are pockets of excess fat, especially in the lower facial area, that contribute to the formation of jowls.
With any facial surgery, be sure that you choose a board-certified surgeon at an accredited medical facility. While cosmetic surgery is generally safe when done by a qualified physician, it is still surgery and does come with some risks. Do your research and be sure to set up a consultation to discuss what procedures will work to provide the look you want. Be sure that you understand what the surgery will entail, how long will be required for recovery and what you can expect afterwards.
