Common causes of wrinkles

As you age, you’ll likely find new folds and lines on your face that weren’t there when you were younger. Though most of us are alarmed by these tell-tale signs of aging, don’t worry — wrinkles are a natural and inevitable part of growing older. However, time isn’t the only culprit causing extra creases to form on your skin. Your lifestyle also plays a big part.
Here are a few of the most common causes of wrinkles.

Smoking
Before you light up, you might want to stop and think about the fact that smoking tobacco is linked to a host of potentially deadly illnesses, in addition to premature aging.   Nicotine in cigarettes narrows your blood vessels, impeding the amount of oxygen and nutrients that flow to your skin. Also, many of the chemicals in tobacco smoke damage collagen and elastin, which help keep your skin looking firm and smooth. This leads to sagging skin, hastening the appearance of wrinkles — sometimes even after only 10 years of smoking.
Sun Exposure
You might think that tan looks great, but you’ll likely regret it later in life. Exposing skin to the sun’s harmful UV rays can damage its collagen, meaning more wrinkles. In fact, excessive sun exposure is one of the leading causes of premature aging of the skin.
Diet
The food we eat doesn’t just affect the size of our body and our energy levels, but the look and feel of our skin as well. Research shows that diets high in fat and carbohydrates promote premature skin aging. Diets high in antioxidant rich foods, lots of veggies, whole grains, and low-fat proteins, including legumes, tofu and fish, help your skin maintain a youthful, wrinkle-free appearance.
Facial Expressions
Laugh lines are nothing to laugh about, because they’re called just that for a reason. Repeated facial movements and expressions — smiles, frowns, squinting — can lead to permanent creases in your skin. This is especially true the older you get, as aging skin loses flexibility and doesn’t spring back into place as easily as it once did.
What can you do?
Obviously, prevention is key when it comes to warding off pesky wrinkles in your later years. Cutting back on the smokes and time spent in the sun, as well as improving your diet are all things you can do immediately.
