New Nose for a New Year

“It is as plain as the nose on your face.”  As any young child can tell you, the nose is centered in the middle of the face, between the eyes and above the mouth.  When we have a conversation with someone, whether we look directly into their eyes or watch their lips, the nose is involved in the scene.  And most people have an opinion on their nose… and also judge attractiveness by the nose of others (whether we consciously think about it or not).

The nose is the central link that anchors all other facial features so if you are not happy with your nose, it can make you feel less confident in all your interactions.  Unlike other facial features, there are no quick make-up tips that can provide a relief if you are displeased with its appearance.  Mascara and lipstick can help bring out the beauty of the eyes and lips, but what do you do with your nose if it is too big, small or lists slightly to one side.   What if there is a bump, dent, scar or other imperfection that bothers you every time you glance in a mirror?

Over the years, the only real fix has been rhinoplasty (otherwise known as a nose job). Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that can correct or reconstruct the form of the nose for either medical or aesthetic reasons.   There are some reasons why getting a surgical nose job makes sense – obviously medical reasons such as a deviated septum or respiratory defect are one reason.  But people have also gone under the knife strictly for cosmetic reasons to reduce the size, narrow the bridge or repair a defect.  For all those that have had surgery, there are many more who would like to improve their appearance but fear undergoing such dramatic surgery.

Today, there are non-surgical options that can improve on the appearance that not only cost less but also require little to no downtime for recovery.  While not all problems can be corrected without surgery, there are many moderate to minor issues that can be repaired in a simple office visit.  That is why non-surgical rhinoplasty is often referred to as the 15 minute nose job.  Take a look at the last article on the Top 5 conditions that can be corrected without surgery.

Dr. Michael Jasin, a facial plastic surgeon in Tampa and an expert on non-surgical rhinoplasty, says that using dermal fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane and Juvederm can help fill in hollows or add volume to make the nose more symmetrical.  The right filler injected by a facial surgeon can reduce the appearance of any bumps, humps, scars, or other defects.  While a non-surgical nose job cannot reduce the size of a large nose, the creation of proportion or smoothing out of contour irregularities can actually make the nose appear smaller on the face.  Often, the patient can see the results immediately and the doctor can make small adjustments during the injection process to produce the best results.  While this is not a permanent solution, the results can last anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending on the type of filler used and where it is placed.

This procedure is extremely safe, requiring often only local anesthesia and other than some minor bruising there are no cuts or stitches that need long term recovery time.  You can go back to work the same day, whereas traditional nose surgery can necessitate up to 10 days before returning to activity and up to 6 months before the pain and swelling dissipate entirely.  For many people who are dissatisfied with the nose on their face, non-surgical rhinoplasty is well worth exploring.
