Many people in the Tampa area get a facelift to counteract the ravages of the harsh Florida sun. However, there are many different types of facelifts available in the region and not all provide the same results. Some facelifts are very intensive and require major surgery to tighten up the skin and underlying tissue, whereas some mini-facelifts will reduce wrinkles temporarily by stretching the outer layer of skin. There are benefits and drawbacks to each distinct type of facelift and the reason to choose one over another depends on various factors. Here are some comparisons for consideration:
Simplicity Facelift vs. Traditional Facelift
The traditional facelift is a very extensive form of facial surgery. The procedure involves a large incision that is made from the temple area behind the hairline along the ear and then behind the ear. This allows the surgeon to access the underlying muscle and connective tissue and pull it tight along the line of the incision. Often this is done under general anesthesia, rather than local anesthesia, which carries a greater risk of complication. The benefit of the traditional facelift is that the facial tissue is pulled tight from several angles to allow for reduced wrinkles across the cheeks and lower face. The drawback is the cost, amount of downtime, greater likelihood of a remaining scar and greater possibility of infection due to the larger area that needs to heal. Traditional lifts will often last a lifetime, but take the longest recovery time. A patient will often have to be out of work for a week to 10 days and have to wait several weeks until the surgery has fully healed. Also, if overdone, the traditional lift can leave a “windblown” appearance that looks less than natural.
By comparison, the Simplicity Facelift uses a proprietary technique that was developed by Dr. Michael Jasin, a renowned facial plastic surgeon in Tampa. This special lift is less invasive than traditional facelift surgery so it requires less cost and less downtime for recovery. With the Simplicity Lift, there are only two small incisions required, one above the ear and one behind the ear. This will allow the surgeon to tighten the skin, muscle and underlying tissue to provide long lasting results. Dr. Jasin created a special “pulley-stitch” that will hold the facelift tight and offer the same quality as with the more extensive surgery. With this procedure (done under local anesthesia), there is less chance of visible scarring since the incision is so small and a smaller possibility of infection because the incisions heal far quicker.
Similar to a traditional facelift, the Simplicity Facelift will reduce wrinkles across the lower portion of the face, jaw line and neck. The results will last a lifetime and the patient can generally see complete results in as little as two weeks. Dr. Jasin’s method also provides a very natural, though younger, look rather than a stretched appearance.
Lifestyle Lifts, Laser Facelift and Mini Facelifts
There are many mini facelifts that are heavily advertised in the Tampa area and these mini lifts are accomplished in a couple of different methods. These lifts were created to make facelifts more affordable to the general public and to limit the overall recovery time. The drawback is that most do not address the underlying muscle or tissue, but rather affect only the outer layer of skin. While the results may look impressive at first, the wrinkles will return because the un-addressed lax facial muscles under the skin will allow new wrinkles to form in exactly the same places as before the procedure.
The Lifestyle Lift in particular is a branded form of a mini-facelift. This means that the surgeon that developed the lift method sold the rights to the technique to a multitude of other medical practitioners. The problem with this is that not all the doctors follow the same procedure and therefore the results can vary greatly from person to person. While some Lifestyle Lift patients have been pleased with their surgery, many others have lodged complaints. Because the Liftstyle Lift does not tighten the layer of muscle which is where most severe wrinkles are formed, the results will be temporary in nature.
Beware of the Laser Lift which is also heavily promoted as it is not a surgical procedure but rather a laser skin treatment that will constrict the skin for a couple of months at best. The thought behind the laser lift is that by aiming heat to the deeper layer of skin, a healing response will reduce wrinkles and tighten the skin. However, this procedure cannot deliver the same results as a surgical facelift. It is not possible to erase twenty years of wrinkles with a non-invasive tissue procedure. The laser therapy has been criticized for its uneven results which vary from patient to patient.
